Clear answers before
your next clinical step.

Essential information about surgical assessment, bariatric procedures, minimally invasive surgery, preparation and long-term follow-up.

01 How do I know whether I need surgery or whether my condition can be treated without it?

Not every surgical condition requires an operation. The decision is based on your symptoms, medical history, physical examination and, when necessary, imaging, laboratory tests or endoscopy. Non-surgical treatment may be recommended when it can manage the condition safely and effectively.

Surgery is considered when it provides a clearer clinical benefit, treats the underlying problem, reduces the risk of complications or when conservative treatment has not been successful. The benefits, risks and alternatives are discussed before any treatment decision is made.

02 Which bariatric procedure may be appropriate for me, and how is it selected?

Procedure selection is individualized and is not determined by weight or BMI alone. Options may include sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, one-anastomosis gastric bypass and selected revisional procedures.

The recommendation considers weight-related conditions, reflux, eating patterns, previous surgery, anatomy, nutritional risk and long-term goals. A complete clinical, metabolic and nutritional assessment is required before selecting the most appropriate procedure.

03 What is the difference between laparoscopic and open surgery, and how long is recovery?

Laparoscopic surgery is performed through several small incisions using a camera and specialized instruments, while open surgery requires a larger incision. When appropriate, laparoscopy is commonly associated with less postoperative discomfort, a shorter hospital stay and a quicker return to normal activity.

Open surgery may still be safer for certain complex or emergency cases. Recovery depends on the operation, its complexity and the patient’s general health, so an individualized recovery timeline is provided during the consultation.

04 What conditions does a colorectal and proctology surgeon treat?

A colorectal and proctology surgeon treats conditions affecting the colon, rectum and anal region. These may include hemorrhoids, anal fissures, anal fistulas, perianal abscesses, pilonidal sinus disease and other inflammatory or infectious anorectal conditions.

Treatment may be medical, laser-based, minimally invasive or surgical depending on the diagnosis, anatomy and severity of the condition.

05 What happens during the consultation and preparation for surgery?

The consultation includes a detailed review of your symptoms, medical history, medications, allergies, previous operations and available results, followed by a focused clinical examination. Additional laboratory tests, imaging or endoscopy may be requested when clinically indicated.

If surgery is recommended, the diagnosis, alternatives, expected benefits, possible risks and recovery plan are explained. Preparation may include an anesthesia assessment, medication and fasting instructions, preoperative testing and hospital coordination.

06 Will I receive follow-up after bariatric or general surgery, and what does it include?

Yes. Follow-up is planned according to the procedure and your individual recovery. After general surgery, appointments may assess wound healing, symptoms, pain control, diet, activity, test results and possible signs of complications.

Bariatric surgery requires structured long-term follow-up covering weight and metabolic progress, nutrition, hydration, protein intake, vitamin and mineral supplementation and periodic blood tests.

This information is general and does not replace an individualized clinical assessment.
